Applied Linguistics for Language Education

Open teaching resources for language teacher education, by Achilleas Kostoulas.

Each resource is a single web page that runs in the browser and accompanies a post on achilleaskostoulas.com. Nothing participants write is stored or sent anywhere: the resources keep no accounts, no database and no analytics, and answers are kept by the participant copying or downloading their own work.

Teacher educators are welcome to use these with their own groups.

What is applied linguistics?

Six activities that ask teachers to rewrite Brumfit's definition, judge where the boundaries of the field lie, appraise a current method or app, answer a lay theory about language learning, design a small study to test an assumption in their own school, and argue a side of the debate about whether teachers need theory at all.

A warm-up, nine activities and a closing reflection on first languages, the language/dialect distinction, the myth of the monolingual society, plurilingual repertoires and language policy. Written for readers working on their own, with a self-check after every activity, prompts for visiting students from outside Greece, a final self-assessment and reading trails for extensive reading.
